What is a custom RSPS?

A custom RSPS adds content that never existed in RuneScape: new bosses, items, skills, zones or game systems, often mixed with familiar ones.

What counts as "custom"

Almost every private server changes something, like experience rates or a home teleport. The word "custom" usually means the server goes further:

  • New content: raids, bosses, minigames or areas designed by the server's own team.
  • New items and tiers: weapon and armour sets above the normal best-in-slot, often with upgrade or "enchant" systems.
  • New systems: battle passes, collection logs with rewards, prestige or rebirth, pets with abilities, daily tasks.
  • New ways to play: browser clients, mobile support, or game modes such as group ironman with custom rules.

How to judge a custom server

  1. Is the content actually original? Screenshots and update posts showing new mechanics are a good sign. A list of "500+ customs" that are recoloured items is not.
  2. Do updates keep coming? Look at the dates on the update log or Discord announcements. Regular, detailed changelogs show an active team.
  3. Is the economy controlled? Ask how the newest top-tier items are obtained. If the answer is mainly "the donation store", expect pay-to-win.
  4. Is the client safe? Custom servers ship custom clients, so check everything in our safety guide.

For a worked example, see how SnowRSPS does custom 317 Affiliated. It is affiliated with this site, so we tag it wherever we mention it.

Frequently asked questions

Are custom RSPS servers pay-to-win?

Some are. Check how the newest best-in-slot items are obtained. If they mostly come from a donation store, the server leans pay-to-win.

Do I need a special client for a custom RSPS?

Usually yes, because new items and areas need new game files. Some servers offer a browser client instead.
