RSPS revisions explained: 317, 474, 718 and OSRS

Private servers are named after the version of the RuneScape client they copy. That number tells you a lot about the graphics, the combat system and the content you will find.

What a revision number is

Every time Jagex updated the game client, its internal build number (the revision) went up. Server developers reverse-engineered particular builds, and the community kept the numbers as shorthand. A "317 server" speaks the 317 client protocol; the content on top can be anything the owner adds.

The common revisions at a glance

RevisionEraWhat to expect
3172006The classic interface and the most popular base. Huge choice of servers; many add OSRS bosses and items.
474 to 5082007 to 2008Late RS2: updated interfaces, early Castle Wars and Fist of Guthix era. Fewer servers today.
562 to 6672009 to 2011Pre-EoC with Summoning, Dungeoneering arrives, HD graphics.
718 (and 742)2012The last big pre-EoC client: Nex, Dungeoneering, Summoning, modern-looking interface.
OSRS2013 to todayOld School content: raids, Zulrah, Vorkath, newer skills and bosses, often on a recent client.

"OSRS" vs "317 with OSRS content"

Many servers labelled OSRS actually run a 317 client loaded with Old School items and maps. That is fine, but it can mean small differences in interfaces and mechanics. If accuracy matters to you, look for servers that say they run on a recent OSRS revision or a RuneLite-style client.

Which one should you pick?

  • Nostalgia for 2006 to 2007: a 317 server.
  • Summoning, Dungeoneering, old switch combat: a 718 or other pre-EoC server.
  • Modern Old School bossing: an OSRS-based server.
  • Something new: a custom server on any revision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best RSPS revision?

There is no single best one. 317 has the most servers, 718 suits pre-EoC fans, and OSRS-based servers suit players who want current Old School content.

What is the difference between 317 and 718 RSPS?

317 copies the 2006 client; 718 copies the 2012 client with Summoning, Dungeoneering and a newer interface. Both use the old combat system.

Does the revision affect safety?

No. Safety depends on who runs the server and where you download the client, not on the revision.
