Best RSPS for beginners: how to choose your first server

The best first server is one that is easy to start, has active players and is honest about donations. Here is how to find it in about fifteen minutes.

Easiest server types to start on

  • OSRS-style with boosted XP: familiar if you have played Old School, and progress feels quick.
  • Spawn servers: no grinding at all, ideal if you want to try PvP straight away.
  • Avoid as a first pick: hardcore eco or ultimate ironman servers, which assume you know the game well.

Make a shortlist

  1. Open a top list or a category page and pick three servers with a green online dot.
  2. Check each server page for uptime history and how long it has been listed.
  3. Join their Discord and read the announcements channel: regular updates are a good sign.

Your first hour

  • Create a unique password (see how to pick a safe RSPS).
  • Look for a starter guide or ::commands list, then claim any starter kit.
  • Vote once to see how rewards work; it also helps the server. How voting works.
  • Don't donate in the first week. If you still enjoy it after that, decide then.

Example of a good starter guide: the SnowRSPS getting-started guide Affiliated.

Common mistakes

  • Trading with strangers before you know item values.
  • Downloading a client from a DM instead of the official site.
  • Choosing a server with lots of votes but an empty Discord.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best RSPS for beginners?

Usually an OSRS-style server with boosted XP and an active community, or a spawn server if you only want PvP. Use the ranked lists and check online status.

Do I need to have played RuneScape?

No, but it helps. Pick a server with a starter guide and a helpful Discord.

Should I donate when I start?

Wait at least a week. Donations are usually non-refundable and only last as long as the server.
