Spawn vs Eco servers: which one is for you?
Spawn servers give you items instantly so you can fight right away. Economy servers make you earn and trade everything. Which is better depends on how you like to spend your time.
Spawn servers in short
On a spawn server you type a command (for example ::item or a spawn interface) to get gear, food and potions, and often set your combat stats directly. Since everyone can get the same gear, items are worth very little; the game is about skill in combat. Most spawn servers are built around PvP, with bounty hunter, wilderness or tournament setups.
Economy servers in short
On an eco server items come from skilling, monsters and bosses, and players trade with each other. Rare drops are actually rare, so your bank grows in value, and there are merchants, shops and markets. Progress is slower but feels earned. Many eco servers offer an ironman mode for players who want to do everything themselves.
Side by side
| Spawn | Economy | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to end-game gear | Minutes | Days to weeks |
| Main activity | PvP, practice, tournaments | Bossing, skilling, trading |
| Item value | Very low | Real, set by players |
| Losing gear on death | Hardly matters | Can hurt a lot |
| Donations | Often cosmetic or convenience | Check whether they affect the economy |
| Good for | Short sessions, practising PvP switches | Long-term goals, collecting, trading |
Quick decision
- You have 30 minutes and want to fight: spawn.
- You want to practise tribrid or switch PvP for the official game: spawn, ideally one with OSRS-accurate combat.
- You enjoy drop logs, merching or building a bank: economy.
- You want both: many economy servers have a safe PvP arena with free gear, and some spawn servers run a separate economy world.
